What is LOST?
Lost is a live action science fiction/fantasy television series that aired from 2004 to 2010. It is centered around a group of people who survive a plane crash on a mysterious island in the south Pacific. The show is available to view in its entirety on Netflix and Hulu Plus.

How does Ben relate to the main cast?
Ben was the leader of a group of people who resided on the island prior to the crash of Oceanic 815. This group was referred to by the crash survivors as "the Others" and were feared as antagonists. The Others kidnapped, assaulted, or murdered many of the crash survivors. Their most infamous acts include sending two moles into the separate camps of the survivors, kidnapping or murdering most of those who were in the tail section, kidnapping a pregnant woman and leaving her friend for dead, and kidnapping a ten year old boy from his father and destroying the raft they were sailing on.

Ben was introduced in season 2. He claimed to be Henry Gale, a man who had crashed on the island in a hot air balloon. The crash survivors eventually discovered that he was lying about his identity and kept him in captivity, only for Ben to be freed by the crash survivor whose son his people had kidnapped. He was revealed to be the group's leader after three key members of the crash survivors were handed to his people. Ben remained an antagonist for seasons 3 and 4, becoming a duplicitous ally in season 5 before honestly aligning himself with the crash survivors in season 6. At the end of the series, Ben remains on the island to help one of the crash survivors serve as the island's protector.

What is the island?
The island is host to a cave containing a light that resides in every human being. This light is referred to by one of the island's protectors as the source of life, death, and rebirth. At the bottom of the cave is a cork holding back a malevolent force that, if set loose, would destroy the island and eventually the world.

In addition to this, the island has special properties relating to electromagnetism and travel through space and time. These properties were exploited by several groups over the course of the island's history, most notably the DHARMA Initiative, a scientific research community that resided on the island from the 1970's to the 1990's. DHARMA left behind many buildings that would later be discovered and used by the crash survivors, including the Swan, an electromagnetic containment center known in season 1 as "the hatch" and opened at the beginning of season 2.

Due to the island's importance, it must be overseen by a protector. The protector has unspecified powers that can be used at their discretion. Powers that have been demonstrated include the power to make another person immortal, and the power to draw vessels to the island. (It should be noted, however, that the crash of Oceanic 815 was caused by a surge in electromagnetic activity due to a failure to contain it by a man stationed in the Swan, although it is implied that many of the crash survivors were brought to the island due to a fate devised by the protector of the island at the time.) The protector themselves are functionally immortal, although they can be killed.

The method used to oversee the island is at the protector's discretion, and has often been conflated with the protector's personal interests and goals. For example, the presence of Ben's group was a consequence of a debate about the nature of man between Jacob, the island's protector during Ben's time, and his brother. In contrast, Jacob's predecessor, a woman who claimed to be his mother, was very insistent on keeping other people off the island due to her mistrust of humanity.

Does anyone else on the show have special powers?
Most people on Lost don't. That includes Ben. There are three characters who can see or hear the dead, one psychic, and another who seems to have control over animals.
