Personality:
In order to understand who Benjamin Linus is, you have to understand who he was. An expert manipulator, Ben excelled at playing mind games that threw his targets into a state of psychological chaos. He got his way no matter how much his victims hated him. Through his vast resources and cunning, he knew which weaknesses to exploit and what promises to make to give him the upper hand. If mind games and bribery didn't work, he resorted to violence. In fact, his turbulent interior often guaranteed violence. Though Ben tried to present himself as a polite gentleman with a folksy nature, inside he was spiteful and petulant, overprotective of the things he considered “his” and unwilling to part with those possessions. Silver-tongued eloquence turned into sharp sardonic quips meant to cut his opponent down to size. If he was truly riled up, his temper would lead to murders made in a heat of passion.
Ben didn't change overnight, but he did change. He just got a whole lot worse before he got better. Losing his power and his adoptive daughter, Alex, made him more vengeful than ever, pushing him to commit some of his vilest, most underhanded deeds in a ploy to regain power and seek revenge for Alex's death. The thing of it was, no matter what he did, he could never get his power back, and he would never feel at peace for what he let happen to Alex. His behavior even made things worse for him, as one of his acts allowed a more sinister force to take on the face of Ben's rival and use Ben as a pawn. Realizing that he was powerless, Ben shifted his focus from regaining power to accruing favor. Deep down inside, that's one of the things Ben truly wants. He wants someplace to belong. He was abused as a child and only had one friend. He hated his life, and leaped at the first chance to join a group of people who could whisk him away. The problem for Ben was he often used dishonesty to accrue favor, which dug him into deeper holes with others. Ben has learned not to do that, perhaps because the last time he did that, he wound up having to dig his own grave. Thankfully the person who intended to kill him for his lies decided to forgive him. Must've been swayed by his heartfelt apology and admission he was going to the dark side because the dark side was the only place that wanted him.
Though Ben Linus has essentially been Tower Arcana'd out of his chaotic old ways, there are still many things about him that have remained the same. Ben is a highly intelligent, observant, and learned individual with a quick wit. His cunning and intelligence makes him an excellent resource, and he is well aware of this fact. Though he as, after five seasons, through with lying, he is still willing to play a role to get results. He prefers to conduct his operations under the radar. His kind and polite demeanor to strangers helps him do that, though these days it's not so much to get their trust as it is him just being himself. Though polite, however, Ben can be focused and to the point and tends to dominate most conversations he engages in.
The events of season six have made Ben realize that much of what he did was selfish and misguided. He's learned to let go of his obsessions and focus on the things that truly matter to him: the things that he loves and wants to protect. As a consequence of this, he's decided to take responsibility for his past misdeeds and offer genuine apologies when appropriate. While others may forgive him for what he's done, however, he still harbors a great deal of guilt over his past and has expressed this on many occasions—even in the afterlife, when he declines to move on with the others, stating “I have some things I still need to work out.” This new approach to life has made him less caustic on the inside, less prone to immature burts of anger. His sense of humor remains the same, however; it's just far less mean-spirited than it used to be.
